Korea and Organized Crime.?

I've watched a lot of Korean film dealing with Gangsters(Gangpe). Is it really like this in Korea? I don't see how they can intimidate people, as guns are so hard to come by. What's the official name of their organization? There is the Mafia, Yakuza, Triads, and so on. What are the Korean called?
