I have a small mortgage and am being made redundant, can I pay it off?

Will I be allowed to pay off my mortgage after I am made redundant? I only have 8 years left of a small mortgage which my redundancy payment will cover, but I've been told I may not be allowed to pay it off by the DSS. Can they stop me or stop any dole I may be entitled to?
