Polynesians only!!! Or if you are schooled on our people?

I have always thought that fiji was polynesian. I have been informed that it is Melanesian. Looking at the poly triangle i see that it only has a few islands in the triangle. So my question is do we consider them polyz cuz tey like us or do we consider them melanesians because they are in the district of the ocean?
