Should I even bother for NY State unemployment as a freelancer?

I was paid monthly wages by a client from 11/07 to 7/09. I was an independent contractor during this time. I did not contribute to unemployment during this time. It sounds like a wash but I've heard there are rare exceptions in which contractors can receive unemployment under these cirstances. Any ideas/experience?
