Could the birth control pill have affected my cervix's ability to produce fertile mucus?

I am 37 and was on the pill for 18 years. I have heard/read that the pill could cause the crypts in the cervix that produce cervical fluid to atrophy and can take a couple of years off the pill to start producing fertile mucus again. I have noticed other types of mucus each month, but never the stretchy egg-white type. I went off the pill last December...
