Why are so many Americans ignorant of their nation's role in the rise of Islamic extremism in Afghanistan?

Not to mention the current abysmal state of the place. Should US history books be revised to concur with the rest of the world, and show that the Carter administration helped overthrow the progressive & secular PDPA government, which resulted eventually in the Taliban taking over?
